Bixby Artists Contribute to The Lost Seal Story
About the Lost Seal Story
The Lost Seal, a children's educational story written by Antarctic scientist Diane McKnight, describes the first documented encounter with a live seal in the remote McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica. It tells of one seal's travels in the Antarctic desert and provides an engaging framework for conveying how different Antarctica and the Dry Valleys are from the environments with which children are familiar.
The Lost Seal story was sent to 2-4 grade classrooms in the U.S., U.K., New Zealand and Australia, reflecting the involvement of explorers and scientists from these countries in research in the Dry Valleys. The participating children created original artwork and descriptions that are all viewable on this website. Selected artwork was also included in the final publication of the book.
See our talented Bixby artists' work!
We believe that two students' pieces have been chosen for consideration for the book: Kate and Anessa.
Look for more information about the final selections and book availability in the fall.
Pigs Over Bixby
Kudos to Connie, who arranged for author and illustrator, Kerry Lee MacLean to spend a day at Bixby. First, Kerry led us in an effective, brief, mind clearing meditation using a technique with a jar of water described in her recent books - The Family Meditation Book and Peaceful Piggy Meditation.
Then, Ms. MacLean and our students created a "Pigs Over Bixby" coloring book based on her award-winning Pigs Over Colorado series. Wait until you see Piggy Pat and Lower Yard! The coloring book is intended to welcome new students to Bixby and to give them a flavor of what Bixby is all about. Each student that is currently enrolled will also receive a copy of the coloring book as well.
Finally, Kerry shared with us her inspiration for becoming an author/illustrator - a story she wrote about worms in 3rd grade! Kerry was a most delightful guest and she was impressed by our children's thoughtfulness, clarity about what they value at Bixby, and word choice and editing skills. She told Connie and I this was one of her best ever experiences working with a school. Natch!
Auction Highlight - Be sure to look for the "Hour with the Author" item to discuss writing and publishing your own children's book. In addition, Kerry donated a complete set of her books and signed posters that will be available to bid on as well.
Bixby Olympics
View Bixby Olympics Slide Show!
The Bixby Olympics were held on Monday, February 27th. Congratulations to the Bixby Olympic Committee: Lauren, Carla, Jessica, Robert, Kristie, and Kitty, all of the teachers and staff, and parent volunteers for putting together a hugely successful day. After an opening ceremony including class introductions and a brief talk about why the Olympics matter, the athletes were sent off to compete in: swimming, a "snowball" relay, the biathlon, track & field, "bobsled," and Olympic sculpture/art. During free time there were stories, videos and an Olympic trivia challenge. The day concluded with a stirring closing ceremony including medals for the athletes and international snacks. Many Olympians talk about being inspired by the Games, but nurtured by a love of movement and sport at school and at home. It was a wonderful thing to be able to share in the Olympic spirit here at Bixby.
Got Activities?
Here are some of the additional after-school activities your child could be involved in this spring: Dance, Adventure Quest, Chess, Yoga, Book Arts, BioQuest, and Swimming (lessons and/or club). Take a look at the After School/Family Enrichment bulletin board for details.
