From Blizzards to Blossoms

What an amazing spring we are having - a blizzard one day and blossoms the next, inches of rain one day and almost record heat a few days later! Children's growth, especially as we approach the end of the school year, has these extremes as well. One day it's so clear that our students are ready for the next grade, and the next day we wonder, "Are they really ready? What else do they need from me?"

One way that we answer these questions in the elementary program is the process of putting students' portfolios together. Suddenly, the year unfolds before our eyes: the creativity, the improved skills, the understanding. We can see "the blizzards and the blossoms" in each portfolio. The progress that sometimes seems elusive is hiding in plain view. "I did that!" and "I learned to . . ." are frequent comments as students remind themselves of their own growth. Gaps are apparent as well. But, there is still time for more learning. That's the beauty of this season.

So, we invite you, our 1st-5th grade parents, to join us in celebrating all that this year has been, so far, on Portfolio Night, May 1st. It is an opportunity for each student to explain what he/she has learned, to discuss the projects that were meaningful and why, and for you to experience your student as a learner. As we saw last year, most students delight in being the center of attention and feel great pride in their work. Your comments to them are taken to heart.

Portfolios are the second part of our three-part assessment process at Bixby. The first part - The Intellectual Character & Socio-Emotional Development Rubric - is provided during conferences with Pat, and the final part - End of the Year Reports (a skills-based assessment) will be mailed to you in June. We believe from our experience and know from research that the combination of these parts provides a thorough and complete assessment of your child as a learner and a classmate. If you have any questions about our elementary program assessment process, please speak with Pat or me.

Here Comes the Sun! Wear Sunscreen and Shoes!

With warmer, sunnier weather we are spending more time outdoors. Please make sure your child has put on sunscreen before coming to school in the morning. We are using Rocky Mountain Sunscreen for Kids SPF 35 for our after lunch application. If your child has ingredient allergies/sensitivities, please send sunscreen that he/she can wear in his/her backpack. Hats are allowed for outdoor use only. They must be removed upon entering the building.

Appropriate footwear is essential for safety. If your child prefers to wear loose fitting shoes, i.e. Crocs (no bedroom slippers please), for comfort in class, then bring along shoes suitable for playing outdoors, climbing in Lower, and participating in sports group.

Yummy Fundraising

It seems early, but put this date on your calendar: Aug. 30th!
Come to Whole Foods for Tastes of the Season
3-5 p.m.
$3 p/plate, all proceeds from plates sold will benefit Bixby so tell your friends, neighbors and relatives!

Allergy Alert

Please be aware that due to potential allergic reactions of staff and students, we prefer that children not bring items containing nuts, especially peanuts, to school in their lunches or for treats. If your child has a lunch with something that is an allergen for others, alternate seating arrangements will be made to decrease the likelihood of an allergic reaction. Thank you for your attention to this very important matter.
