The above are two classics from the Love & Logic series, which stress the development of self-    efficacy, personal responsibility, and logical consequences.  Will help parents become more consistent and feel less out of control.

How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk
Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish, Collins, 1999

Another classic.  Offers doable techniques for opening and sustaining  communication. Fits well with Love & Logic techniques, although not affiliated.

Child Development

The Hurried Child: Growing Up Too Fast Too Soon, Third Edition
David Elkind, Perseus Publishing, 2001

This book discusses the importance of recognizing the stresses that contemporary society places on our children and why we as parents and educators must “push back” on behalf of our children and their development.  Elkind is also a prolific and persuasive writer on the importance of play in the development of thinking among preschoolers and early elementary students.

The seminal book on how parents are/should be instrumental in the development of literacy. Filled with wonderful examples and doable ideas.
